Child Rights and You America is a nonprofit organization that raises funds in support of projects in India aimed toward restoring basic rights to children from marginalized communities. 19 year-old Indian singer Akshay Hari, along with CRY local chapter chair Adam McGregor, join us to preview their Festival in the Park fundraiser.

Coach Holder & The Stingrays

Three Rivers Arts Festival

Thank you to everyone who connected with The Saturday Light Brigade during this year’s Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 4th -13th.

SLB’s tent was open Saturdays and Sundays (noon to 5 p.m.) in the Creativity Zone in Point State Park and collected thoughts from children and youth on the role the arts play in their lives.

The responses were featured on SLB StoryBox units on exhibition at The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Arts Education Center, 805/807 Liberty Avenue until June 16, 2010.

Country music legend Slim Bryant

Thomas Hoyt “Slim” Bryant passed away at age 101 on May 28, 2010. Born in Atlanta, he came to Pittsburgh in 1940 and, together with his band The Wildcats, soon became a popular country music performer on stage and on the KDKA Radio Farm Report. While a local treasure, Mr. Bryant had a national following and a hit record (“Mother, The Queen of My Heart”) recorded by Jimmie Rodgers and covered by manyartists, including Arlo Guthrie, Merle Haggard, and George Jones. He also was the last surviving musician to have recorded with the legendary country singer Jimmy Rodgers, who died in 1933.

International Children’s Painting Competition Exhibition

As we celebrate World Environment Day with Pittsburgh as the North American host city, Rebecca Lucore talks about Pittsburgh’s hosting of the International Children’s Painting Competition Exhibition, organized annually by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Bayer Corporation and Nikon Corporation. The competition invites children from around the world, ages six to 14, to illustrate their personal view of the environment. More than 75 artworks from North America, including the winning entries and the best from Pittsburgh, are on display 6/4 through 8/1 at Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. This year’s theme is “Biodiversity: Connecting with Nature.”

Tree Climbing Championship

The Penn-Del Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture will host the Western Tree Climbing Championship in Allegheny Commons on Saturday May 22. The competitive games will provide an opportunity for tree lovers to see professional tree workers perform skills used in the tree industry. A series of five contest events challenge climbers in the ways of daily work situations. Arborist and competitor Rob Kruljac joins us to discuss.
