New Years Hopes

Look for six new SLB StoryBoxes featuring the voices of sixty children expressing their hopes for 2011 at First Night Pittsburgh.

Created in conjunction with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Hear Me project, these StoryBoxes will be installed at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Arts Education Center, 805/807 Liberty Avenue, Downtown from New Year’s Eve through late January.

“Exploring the road to a better Pittsburgh – Where we are and where we are going.”

In July 2010, twenty students about to enter their first year of college created these nine radio documentaries as part of their position as Summer Interns at The Heinz Endowments. Because the internship program focused on environmental issues, students developed radio features covering a range of environmental issues. While SLB provided training and coaching, the documentaries presented here were entirely conceived and created by the students in just one week.

Dirty Rivers
Shana Williams and Conner Plunkett speak with kids visiting the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Arthur Tamilia (ALCOSAN)
and Len Jesteadt (Millvale Marina) about the water quality in Pittsburgh’s rivers.

Overpopulation
Hannah Somers, Tristan Caloyer and Jessica Tarantine speak with Bill Ryerson (The Population Institute and Media Center)
and Dr. Lipika Mazumdar (University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg) about the effects of overpopulation on the earth and its resources.

Park Violence
Brianna Evans-Potter and Chalese Floyd speak with boys (ages 11-13) and Alicia Andrews (Human Services Corp.)
about the violence that occurs in public parks.

Global Warming
Jasmine Springer, Kaity Ripple and Lonnie Carroll speak with Sharon Pillar (Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future)
and Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh visitors about global climate change and people’s perceptions of the issue.

Gulf Oil Spill
Travis Maloy and Doretha Murray speak with Eric Liffmann (International Bird Rescue Research Center)
and Captain Damon McKnight (charter fisherman) about the effects of the 2010 Gulf Coast oil spill on the area’s water systems and wildlife.

Sustainable Pittsburgh
Sabina Lemo, Pankaj Aggerwal and Paula Simon.

Green Jobs
Talia Kirkland and Aleesha Allen speak with Maureen Copeland (GTECH Strategies) and Mike Gabel (Construction Junction)
about how the green jobs movement can ease the unemployment rate.

Safe Cosmetics
Tessa Hochberg, Mukui Mutunga and Ashley Cullens speak with girls (ages 11-13), Sarah Alessio (Pennsylvania Resources Council)
and Stacy Malkan (author) about the effects of personal care products and cosmetics on young girls’ health.

Carbon Footprint
Christina Brown, Anna Koebley and Miles Early speak with Eric Beckman (University of Pittsburgh)
and some children at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh about energy use and ways to reduce.

These original compositions were written by the Pittsburgh Allegheny K-5 Young Writers’ Club. Participating 3rd and 4th graders met after school on a regular basis, wrote and polished their projects, and recorded them in their classroom using portable recorders.

Girl Talk Radio PPG Edition features two teams from Manchester Academic Charter School interviewing two women with outstanding careers in science and technology at PPG Industries.

What’s your favorite animal? What animal would you be if you could? Children from Pittsburgh Allegheny PreK learned digital recording and photography as they shared thoughts and stories about animals in The Saturday Light Brigade broadcast studios. Think about your answers as you listen to the ideas of these children. This project is supported in part by Spark, a program of The Sprout Fund, with support from The Buhl Foundation. Spark is an initiative of The Sprout Fun, catalyzing projects and programs that engage children ages birth to 8 through the creative use of technology and media.

Students in 6th through 8th grade at Pittsburgh Manchester Pre-K-8 took time to reflect on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This StoryBox unit presents the resulting spoken essays about his life as well as through verbal interpretations of specific passages from Dr. King’s speeches.

What are you thankful for? After personal reflection, twenty-three 6th through 8th graders from Pittsburgh Allegheny K-8 outlined, wrote and recorded these short essays during an SLB broadcast workshop as part of the YouthALIVE! afterschool program at the Children’s Museum. Their answers are wide-ranging and uplifting and appeared on StoryBoxes in their school as well as the museum.
