We spent the afternoon in the Saturday Light Brigade Broadcast studios designing pieces to fill out our programming. Some of the girls went into the production booth and used online resources to help them develop a song about radio. We also hosted our own version of SportsCenter in the main studio, talking about our outlooks for the coming NFL season. Listen below!

We’re just past the halfway point in the Summer Dreamers Academy for 2010! Today we recorded our commercials and began writing songs and raps to fill out our program for the week. We’ll continue working on these tomorrow, as well as begin putting together radio programming for Friday.

Radio Commercials

Today campers listened to “old-fashioned” radio commercials and jingles. Then we decided to make our own products. These included: a Money Vault, a Bully Eliminator, and a portable DJ-booth. The campers wrote “pitches” for their products and jingles too. Tomorrow we’ll post the final recordings along with photos of the imaginary products themselves! Great job today campers.

Week 3 found us taking a class trip to the other side of the museum where The Saturday Light Brigade broadcasting studios are located. There we received an interactive demonstration of how radio programming works: playing commercials, using sound-bytes, placing callers on the air, playing music, and creating a personality that helps to tie all of these elements together. Campers were able to interact with the equipment and helped us record “drops” for our radio program, which you can hear this Saturday between 6 am and 12 pm. Today, we also used a midi-controller to record sound fx for our 5 sounds stories. Great job today campers!

5 Sound Stories, part 2

Today many campers began to record their “5 sounds stories” using H2s. The kids are now able to use the digital recorders autonomously, and so were able to find quiet spaces to record by themselves. One story involves a boogie-man on a campground, another is a classic tale of cops and robbers. Each story will be infused with sound effects on Monday. We finished up our week outside playing a game of telephone using our tin-can microphones! Have a good weekend SDA!

5 Sounds Stories

Today campers listed the sound effects that they liked from this week. Then they had to pick five, and string them together to form a story. Tomorrow, we’ll record them performing both their pieces, and the accompanying sound effects to be strung together next week.

Whisper Tubes

Even though you can’t see it, audio is physical, and we learned that first-hand today when we constructed whisper tubes. Whisper tubes demonstrate how a sound “bounces” from one tube into the next at a 90 degree angle. Even in a noisy room (certain students were encouraged to make as much noise as possible), the sound of one’s voice is still perfectly clear and audible using these devices. Today we also dissected microphones and learned more about microphone technology. Finally, we finished decorating our paper machete microphones. Great job today campers!
