Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 Radio Club: Radio Kits!
Today in Radio Club we learned how to build a working radio out of a kit! Students broke into groups or worked on their own to follow instructions on building a working radio.
Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 Radio Club: Spring Poems
Students in Radio Club at Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 wrote and recorded these acrostic poems about spring. First we had a discussion about what makes an acrostic poem (a poem in which the first letter of each line in the text spells out a word or a message – in this case, SPRING). Then, everyone wrote their poems and drew pictures to accompany them!
Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 Radio Club: The Importance of Creativity
Students in Radio Club at Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 wrote and recorded these pieces about the importance of creativity. First we had a discussion about ways to be creative and the things that make it fun. Then, we each wrote about what what being creative means to us.
The ZONE: Audio Mad Lib
The ZONE’s Radio Clubers received access to Netbooks, with which they assembled a Mad Lib from previously recorded audio fragments. Most recordings had transformed into the Beatle’s “Revolution 9”-esque mishmashes before they’d even unleashed the “Pitch Bender” feature upon them.
Pittsburgh Langley K-8: Technology Talk
Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 wrote and recorded pieces in which they discussed technology and how it affects their daily lives. These pieces are the result of weekly sessions in which students are learning about the equipment and techniques used in producing features for radio, with the goal of creating announcements for their morning assembly.

First we had a discussion about what we listen to on the radio and what we would like to hear more of. Then, we each wrote about what our station would sound like and even recorded our tagline! The ZONE: Audio Editing
Students at The ZONE’s Radio Club got a chance to edit some of their own audio. After virtually obliterating some annoying mouth noise and demolishing numerous mispronunciations they discovered the “Pitch Bending” function. Needless to say, they loved making people sound like Sloth from “The Goonies.”
Pittsburgh Langley K-8: Saturday Light Brigade Studio Visit
Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 visited The Saturday Light Brigade radio studio this past week. During their visit, they learned how a radio studio operates, and learned about the technical side of producing a radio broadcast. This trip was a part weekly sessions in which Radio Club students have been creating announcements for their morning assembly.
