Our weekly radio program invites students in Grades K-12 to perform live on the air. Hear young musicians, singer/songwriters, photographers, writers, poets and other people who express themselves through the arts.

Since 1978, The Saturday Light Brigade has broadcast LIVE spontaneous on-air phone calls from kids and adults as part of its Saturday morning radio program. Now you can hear some of the most memorable calls from people participating in on-air games and other participatory features or simply calling to tell us about something exciting.

These summer performance camps are designed to give kids the opportunity to experience preparing for and performing on the stage. Abbie Ferry,19, has been playing guitar for about 4 years. She graduated from Franklin Regional High School in 2010 and is going into her second year at Penn State University at University Park. We’re pleased to host her debut broadcast performance, live on SLB.

The Green Compass Season 3

Twenty-six students about to enter their first year of college (and two older college students) created these radio features as Summer Interns at The Heinz Endowments. Because the Summer 2011 internship program focused on issues of sustainability, the resulting features cover a range of community and environmental issues. While SLB provided training and coaching, the features presented here were conceived and created entirely by the students in a single week.

Feature: Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Teen Docent Program

Joining us are the young adults from the CMNH’s Teen Docent Program. Teens ages 13 and up may become trained museum volunteers who answer visitors’ questions about animals, exhibitions and the museum. Most often you see them at Exploration Carts focusing on Alcoa Foundation Hall of American Indians, Dinosaurs in Their Time, Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt, Hall of African Wildlife, and Insects.

Feature: Write On! City Theater’s Young Playwrights at Summer Dreamers

In “Write On!” at Summer Dreamers Camp CAPA, professional artists work with campers to teach the art of playwriting, using many theatre tools such as acting, improvisation, brainstorming, and movement. Campers interact with professional actors and directors while penning original plays. Joining us is Kristen Link from City Theatre and her young playwrights, live on SLB.
