Live Music: Slim Forsythe and the Payday Loaners
From 9/15/12: Slim Forsyth and his accompanying group, the Payday Loaners, with a live performance and a preview of a Hank Williams Tribute show that will take place 9/21 at the Lawrenceville Moose, with proceeds benefitting Pittsburgh Cares during its 20th anniversary year.
Live Music: Boulevard of the Allies
New at Neighborhoodvoices: London-born singer-songwriter Joel Lindsey fronts Pittsburgh pop-rock outfit Boulevard of the Allies. Together with Boulevard bassist Jim Kurasch, we were pleased to welcome this duo this past week, as they performed their original, catchy and thoughtful pop songs, live on SLB.
Live Music: Jenny Morgan
New at Neighborhoodvoices: A recent import to Pittsburgh, having been raised in Austin, Texas, Jenny Morgan has received songwriting awards from the Kerrville Folk Festival and the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. Expanding a repertoire that spans many genres and themes, she is now recording her third album, performing with Musicians with a Mission, and generally finding a home in the Pittsburgh music scene. We were thrilled to have Jenny join us this past week performing some of her original songs, including one piece with her son Phineas, live on SLB.
Live Music: Sidewalk String Band
New at Neighborhoodvoices: Hailing from Pittsburgh, Sidewalk String band is Phil Giammattei (guitar, upright bass, lead vocals), Zach Kurtz (mandolin, guitar, vocals) and Jessica Spieser-Landes (fiddle, bones, vocals, band manager). We were thrilled to welcome this talented trio onto the SLB airwaves.
Live Music: Tony Denikos
New at Neighborhoodvoices: Tony Denikos performs roots rock and americana, and hails from Laurel, Maryland. His 2009 release, “Almost Gone,” has been an international hit, charting at #2 in the Euro Americana charts, and his most recent release, “Under the Church” is available now. We were pleased to host this talented musician this past week, live on SLB.
Live Music: Ellis Paul
New at Neighborhoodvoices: Ellis Paul joins us for a special hour of music. Ellis’s new album, The Hero in You, recently won a gold Parent’s Choice award. He has won an unprecedented number of Boston Music Awards – 14, to be precise – and even has a holiday named after him: Ellis Paul Day is July 9th in Boston. We are thrilled to have Ellis join us, live on SLB.
Live Music: Sons of Solome
New at Neighborhoodvoices: Rick Ermlick and Tom Moran formed Sons of Solome in 2011, combining 80 years of unique musical experience. In SoS, Rich plays percussion, such as doumbek, frame drum, and djembe. Tom’s primary instruments for performing live are an electric oud and an electric sitar. The duo references their own cul;tural influences of rock, surf, and R&B into the World music styles of West and North Africa, Central Asia, and India and the Middle East.

In July 2012, twenty-three students about to enter their first year of college created these nine radio features as Youth Philanthropy Summer Interns at The Heinz Endowments. Because the Summer 2012 internship program focused on issues of sustainability, the resulting features cover a range of community, social and environmental issues. While SLB provided training and coaching, the features presented here were conceived and created entirely by the students in a single week.
Live Music: Faithful Sinners
New at Neighborhoodvoices: Faithful Sinners soulfully combines the songwriting and singing of Erika June Christina Laing, who also plays the musical saw, and Zander Hendrickson, who plays acoustic guitar. We are excited to welcome this duo to the SLB airwaves!
