Most recordings had transformed into the Beatle’s “Revolution 9”-esque mishmashes before they’d even unleashed the “Pitch Bender” feature upon them.
This week in Radio Club, we finished our time clocks from the previous week and shared with the group what our radio program would sound like. Then we had a discussion about creativity and why it’s important for ourselves and for our world.
Radio Clubers at Clairton used MacBooks to assemble an Audio Mad Lib; using previous recorded clips of verbs and nouns, as well as the “body” of the Mad Lib (secretly recorded at the SLB studios), students built a finished Mad Lib in Adobe Audition. But, rather than conforming to boring, generic coherence, most of the students rendered their finished Mad Libs into Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.”
Today, students in Radio Club at Project Destiny got to see what it takes to run a radio program. Everyone got a chance to sit in the “DJ chair” and run the mixing board. We listened to CDs, chose music from the mp3 library and interviewed each other. As you can see from the photos, a lot of fun was had. We even learned about designing a studio and the materials used to make a room sound proof and radio friendly!
Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 wrote and recorded pieces in which they discussed technology and how it affects their daily lives. These pieces are the result of weekly sessions in which students are learning about the equipment and techniques used in producing features for radio, with the goal of creating announcements for their morning assembly.
Students in Radio Club at Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 wrote and recorded these pieces about their radio stations. First we had a discussion about what we listen to on the radio and what we would like to hear more of. Then, we each wrote about what our station would sound like and even recorded our tagline! Listen below to hear what everyone created.
Students at The ZONE’s Radio Club got a chance to edit some of their own audio. After virtually obliterating some annoying mouth noise and demolishing numerous mispronunciations they discovered the “Pitch Bending” function. Needless to say, they loved making people sound like Sloth from “The Goonies.”
With the weather finally turning (sort of) and Spring seemingly right around the corner (right? RIGHT?), Radio Clubers allowed themselves to dream of short sleeve shirts, flip flops and sunglasses. After recording about what they planned to do when the fabled sun returned, they then had to make the difficult decision between being able to speak to animals or being able to speak every other language.
Today in Radio Club we built radios from a kit. Everyone worked in teams and helped each other to follow the instructions and put together a working radio! Then we had to listen to see if we could identify the stations we were hearing as well as how to improve the reception by walking around the room and changing the location of the antenna. Everyone shared at least one thing that they learned during the process.
Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 visited The Saturday Light Brigade radio studio this past week. During their visit, they learned how a radio studio operates, and learned about the technical side of producing a radio broadcast. This trip was a part weekly sessions in which Radio Club students have been creating announcements for their morning assembly.
