Youth Expression Showcase

Young writer and twelve year-old Quaker Valley Middle School student, Sophie Claypole, joins us to read excerpts from some her orignial story, The Problem with Wishes.

NC State sophomore and Upper St. Clair High School grad Brian Gaudio, along with friends, join us to discuss their unique organization, Shoemanity, which aims to design sustainable solutions that improve quality of life in the rural Dominican Republic and Haiti, through the lens of cultural collaboration.

We’re pleased to welcome the legendary swimming coach, Hosea Holder, who has been inspiring and creating opportunities for kids ages 6-18 to learn to swim and compete for over 40 years. His team, The Stingrays, are a year-round, competitive program based at the Kingsley Center, East Liberty. Coach will be joined by a few of his past and present students, live on SLB.

When Rachel Tobin, now a seventeen year-old from Churchill, was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of twelve, she came up with the idea to design and sell bracelets and donate the proceeds to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. To date, she has donated over $29,000 to the charity, starting her own business, Rachel’s Cure by Design. She joins us to discuss.

We’re quite pleased to welcome the wonderfully talented singer and North Allegheny 8th Grade student, Greta Schaltenbrand, live in our studios. Greta will be accompanied by fellow students SunJoo Lee on piano and David Schmiech on guitar.

Four teen-writers, publishers and comic artists from Bishop Leonard St. Mary of the Mount Academy on Mt. Washington join us to discuss their student run newspaper, The BLSMMA Blitz. Founder Marguerite McCrory, Jessica Bauer, Lauren Lucas and Terry McCollum co-run the paper that has released monthly editions since October ’09. Terry McCollum will also perform an original song on guitar, live on SLB.
