APOST Afterschool Advocacy Day 2019
On March 27th, Allegheny Partners for Out-of-School Time (APOST) brought together Pittsburgh-area students for a trip to Pennsylvania’s Capitol in Harrisburg. The students advocated for afterschool activity resources and learned about local government. They also talked with elected officials and recorded reflections on their experience.

Aliquippa Impact Black History Month Profiles
In celebration of Black History Month, with a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, youth from Aliquippa Impact selected important African Americans to research, profile, and present about at the B.F. Jones Memorial Library. Community leaders Mayor Dwan Walker and city administrator Sam Gill were on hand to hear the presentations and talk with the youth.
Manchester Academic Charter School Afterschool : MACS FM
Students in grades 6-8 at Manchester Academic Charter School are working with SLB Radio to prepare and record weekly podcasts and commentaries as part of an afterschool program. These pieces are a result of their weekly sessions in which students will learn about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio.
Streaming Justice Webcast 2019: Students Honor MLK
On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, high school students hosted Streaming Justice, a live four-hour webcast. From 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., participants hosted the live webcast, selected the songs played during their segments and learned about the equipment used in a live broadcast. Discussions covered topics such as civil rights, youth engagement, public education and other matters of justice and equity.
Students that participated in Streaming Justice are from area schools including Obama Academy, Oakland Catholic, Penn Hills High School, Nazareth Prep, Environmental Charter School, Sci-Tech, St. Benedict the Moor and Woodland Hills Junior Senior High School.
Martin Luther King, Jr Day Celebration
The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh offered a day of special programming for youth and families to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; including live webcasting, collaborative artwork, music, and more.
Community Library of Allegheny Valley
SLB traveled north to the Community Library of Allegheny Valley in Natrona Heights for a great workshop with area youth in the teen reading lounge! Take a listen and learn about this group’s ambitions and resolutions for 2019 — as well as some interesting facts about the region. After recording, students also learned the basics of audio editing.
