In July 2015, twenty-one recent high-school graduates created these radio features while serving as Summer Interns at The Heinz Endowments. The resulting features cover a range of community issues. While SLB provided training and coaching, the features presented here were conceived and created entirely by the students in a single week.
Inclined to Care: Lifting the Alleghenies to New Heights, 2015
IN SUMMER 2015, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies welcomed ten students as Youth Philanthropy Interns. This 8-week program was made possible through a grant from The Heinz Endowments and is based on its long-running similar program in Pittsburgh.
Throughout their internship, students assessed community needs and developed two funding opportunities for local non-profits to apply for grants of up to $25,000 to address these needs. In addition to their grantmaking, interns created these radio documentaries.
Moon Area School District: “How To” Storybox
In Summer 2015, SLB Radio Productions Inc., in partnership with Moon Area School District convened a group of first through fourth graders. While learning about digital audio recording, the group also designed their own books and shared something that they know how to do!
Camp FUN: Commercials
As we finished up a great summer of learning about audio, interviewing, and making recordings, campers tried their hand at writing commercials. Some campers chose businesses that already exist, while others created their own services and penned advertisements accordingly. A few writers even elected to add music.
