The Media Empowerment Student Summit held at Carnegie Mellon gave local students a chance to learn from a variety of local professionals including Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Teen Bloc, and Teens 4 Change. The pieces below are from students tried their hand at recording during the SLB audio workshop.
Pittsburgh Brashear After School: Three Things About Me
In our first Radio Club meeting, students and SLB staff got to know more about each other and some of the equipment we’ll be using to create audio pieces together through the year. After School students shared a little bit about themselves by writing and recording “Three Things About Me.”
From There to Here…2014/2015
As part of their Fall 2014 Social Studies unit, thirty-three Winchester Thurston School fifth graders interviewed people who came to the U.S. from other countries.
This collaboration between SLB Radio Productions, Inc. and Winchester Thurston School was funded by the City as Our Campus initiative.
Clairton CASTLE 2014: Three Things About Me
After a discussion about microphones and digital recorders used in producing features for radio, students in Clairton’s CASTLE program wrote and recorded these pieces where they describe themselves in three ways.
Pittsburgh King After School: 3 Things About Me
For our first day of After School with Radio Club, we learned a bit about each other by sharing Three Things about ourselves. This is the first of 10 sessions where we will learn about microphones, digital recorders and the technology used to make professional radio pieces.
Wilkinsburg TIGERS: Radio Club Hopes
In our first week of after school radio club, students shared and recorded what skills, experiences, and proficiencies they hope to gain over the course of the year. Everyone then had the opportunity to edit the wavelength audio. Some students are looking forward to creating music, while others are more interested in focusing on the technical element of audio recording.
The Green Compass Season 6
In July 2014, thirty-two recent high-school graduates created these radio features while serving as Summer Interns at The Heinz Endowments. The resulting features cover a range of community issues. While SLB provided training and coaching, the features presented here were conceived and created entirely by the students in a single week.
Inclined to Care: Lifting the Alleghenies to New Heights, 2014
IN SUMMER 2014, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies welcomed ten students as Youth Philanthropy Interns. This 8-week program was made possible through a grant from The Heinz Endowments and is based on its long-running similar program in Pittsburgh.
Throughout their internship, students assessed community needs and developed two funding opportunities for local non-profits to apply for grants of up to $25,000 to address these needs. In addition to their grantmaking, interns created these radio documentaries.

Grow Pittsburgh’s Urban Farmers in Training: 2014 Reflections
Grow Pittsburgh’s Summer Intern Program at Braddock Farms provides local teens with the opportunity to gain summer employment while learning about the value of growing and eating healthy food.
