Since 1978, The Saturday Light Brigade has broadcast LIVE spontaneous on-air phone calls from kids and adults as part of its Saturday morning radio program. Now you can hear some of the most memorable calls from people participating in on-air games and other participatory features or simply calling to tell us about something exciting.

Join us as we celebrate the original talent in our midst with these weekly archives of in-studio performances by regional and national musicians and artists. Folk, bluegrass, jazz, singer/songwriter, international, storytellers and more!

Students in Radio Club at Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 wrote and recorded these pieces where they describe themselves in three ways. They had a great time learning about how to hold the microphone and recording on a microphone for the first time (with a few exceptions!).

Clairton CASTLE: Mad Libs

On our 3rd meeeting of CASTLE’s Radio Club, students were given Mad Libs and tasked with imagining the strangest, silliest nouns and verbs they could think of. The first hurdle: learning what an adverb was. The second hurdle: pronouncing “Mad Lib.”

Pittsburgh Langley K-8: A Time I Achieved

Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 wrote and recorded these pieces about a time they achieved something. These pieces are the result of weekly sessions in which students are learning about the equipment and techniques used in producing features for radio, with the goal of creating announcements for their morning assembly.

Clairton CASTLE: “Who Am I?” Game

On our 2nd meeting of CASTLE’s 2nd semester, we decided to collectively blow off some steam and play the “Who Am I?” game. Everyone was given a sticky note and tasked with writing down the name of someone or something famous/well known. They then passed their notes to the person on their right, who would then affix the note to their forehead. The students then took turns speaking into a H1 digital recorder and asking questions about who or what they were.

In early 2014, students in 6th and 7th grade at Pittsburgh Morrow 5 – 7 wrote poems in Ms. McCarthy’s english class focusing on Ambition over Adversity while learning about theme and tone.
