Since 1978, The Saturday Light Brigade has broadcast LIVE spontaneous on-air phone calls from kids and adults as part of its Saturday morning radio program. Now you can hear some of the most memorable calls from people participating in on-air games and other participatory features or simply calling to tell us about something exciting.

Pittsburgh King PreK-8: Three Things About Me

Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh King PreK-8 wrote and recorded these pieces where they describe three things about themselves. It was then produced into a montage with a beat that they recorded. These pieces are from the first week of a twelve-week after school workshop, in which students learn about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio, as well as how to express themselves clearly.

As part of a 12-week Creative Arts program focused on radio broadcasting, Propel Northside fifth graders identified social issues that concerned them. They then researched, wrote and recorded these public service announcements to promote organizations working to address these issues. This project was designed to expose students to people making a difference, career opportunities focused on helping people, and the power of clear writing and speaking as a means of conveying information to others.

As part of a 12-week Creative Arts program focused on the power of the human voice, Propel Northside fourth graders wrote, illustrated and recorded these original stories and fables incorporating the Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible behavior goals of Propel Schools to be presented to rising kindergartners, while also learning about the technology used to make audio recordings. They filled out family trees with their families at home, brought them to class, and wrote stories blending fiction and non-fiction based upon these family trees and facts about themselves. These stories are also scheduled for distribution via The Saturday Light Brigade radio program.
