Since 1978, The Saturday Light Brigade has broadcast LIVE spontaneous on-air phone calls from kids and adults as part of its Saturday morning radio program. Now you can hear some of the most memorable calls from people participating in on-air games and other participatory features or simply calling to tell us about something exciting.

Pittsburgh King After School: Super Power

If you had to pick one super power, what would you choose? We asked students at Pittsburgh King the same question and got some really off the board answers. Our Radio Club members aren’t interested in standard powers like flying or invisibility, but would rather have control over lava or be able to melt faces.

Pittsburgh King After School: Interviewing

Students at Pittsburgh King got the chance to interview each other and learn some basic examination techniques. Afterwards we played the Who Am I? game, where students try to figure out which famous person they are by asking their fellow classmates questions.

Pittsburgh Schiller 6-8 2015: Three Things About Me

Students in Radio Club at Pittsburgh Schiller 6-8 wrote and recorded these pieces where they describe themselves in three ways. These pieces are a result of the first of six weekly sessions in which students will learn about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio.

Young artists and families of Pittsburgh Montessori gathered in the theatre of the Children’s Museum to celebrate their work. The “One School: Many Faces, Many Places” exhibit featured self-portraits, mud-paintings, and collage work. We welcomed these young artists into our studios to talk about their experience and share their artistic philosophies as well as their creative methods.

After Schoolers used that form to get creative with haiku poems of their own. Some King students used their works to commemorate sporting events, while others celebrated their friends.

Voices of Brothers and Sisters Emerging

During the 2014- 2015 school year, SLB , in partnership with Brothers and Sisters Emerging convened a group of middle and high school students. While learning about digital audio recording, the group also spent time discussing attributes of role models and identifying adults with a connection to Garfield to be interviewed. With support as needed, students then arranged, conducted and edited the interviews.

We asked After Schoolers at Pittsburgh King who they would have dinner with if it could be anyone that has ever lived. Some students chose family members while others chose athletes or celebrities to share their meal with.

Miami, Las Vegas, and Germany were just a few a places King students said they would like to visit if they could go anywhere in the world. Some After Schoolers have some pretty trips laid out – even crossing the Atlantic Ocean by helicopter to go shopping in Paris!

It’s hard to believe but we haven’t seen the King After School kids in about a month due to the holiday schedule. Students shared some of their ambitions with us for the new year. Their goals are wide-ranging; everything from trying new sports to learning more about professional wrestling.
