Carlow University Students Return to the Roots of the Civil Rights Movement
As part of a course on the Roots of the Civil Rights Movement taught by Associate Professor, Dr. Linda Schifino, Carlow University students traveled through the south in the summers of 2010 and 2012. For nine days, the students traveled by bus, covering over 2,300 miles through Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Major sites included the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, the lunch counter in Greensboro North Carolina, the National Voting Rights Museum & Instute in Selma, as well as churches and other famous locations that commemorate the Civil Rights Movement.
Pittsburgh King PreK-8: Something Important
Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh King PreK-8 wrote and recorded these pieces where they describe something that is important to them. They were introduced to the concept of interviewing and explored asking each other questions on their topic.
Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5: Peace and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Students in Radio Club at Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 wrote and recorded these poems (and a song!) describing their thoughts on peace and Martin Luther King, Jr. These pieces are a result of the third of six weekly sessions in which students are learning about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio.

Live Music: Peter Yarrow with Mustard’s Retreat
From 1/19/13: Folk legend Peter Yarrow with a special performance featuring Michigan-based folk duo Mustard’s Retreat.
While best known for his role in Peter, Paul & Mary, people around the world also know Peter Yarrow as the co-writer of “Puff, The Magic Dragon” as well as author of “Day is Done, Light One Candle” and other songs of hope. Peter also is the founder of Operation Respect, an organization dedicated to providing children with an environment free of bullying, ridicule and violence.

Pittsburgh King PreK-8: Our Radio Station – KOTS – Kids On the Set
Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh King PreK-8 created the name and concept for their own mock radio station. They then learned about programming content, decided on what they would air, and began recording original pieces.

These pieces are a result of the second of five weekly sessions in which students will learn about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio.
