Since 1978, The Saturday Light Brigade has broadcast LIVE spontaneous on-air phone calls from kids and adults as part of its Saturday morning radio program. Now you can hear some of the most memorable calls from people participating in on-air games and other participatory features or simply calling to tell us about something exciting.

Pittsburgh Brashear After School: Audio Editing

After last week’s interview with a Brashear alum, students were introduced to wave editing software. Each Radio Club member got a chance to learn the basics of the program Adobe Audition and work on their recorded audio from the previous session.

Voices of Brothers and Sisters Emerging

During the 2014- 2015 school year, SLB , in partnership with Brothers and Sisters Emerging convened a group of middle and high school students. While learning about digital audio recording, the group also spent time discussing attributes of role models and identifying adults with a connection to Garfield to be interviewed. With support as needed, students then arranged, conducted and edited the interviews.

We asked After Schoolers at Pittsburgh King who they would have dinner with if it could be anyone that has ever lived. Some students chose family members while others chose athletes or celebrities to share their meal with.

Pittsburgh Brashear After School: Dinner With Anyone

We asked our first two blocks of Brashear students if they could have dinner with anyone ever – dead or alive – who they would choose. There were some interesting responses, ranging from family members to Michael Jackson to Penguins goaltender Marc Andre Fleury.

The Youth Media Advocacy project teaches local high school students how to use the media to gain a voice in the community, and helps them hone ideas for advocacy campaigns that will aid their schools and communities. Students from Wilkinsburg High School, Pittsburgh Obama and Pittsburgh Brashear return to classrooms after Winter break to discuss education issues and set goals for 2015.

After Schoolers will be interviewing a Brashear alum next week, so students brushed up on their examination skills. Radio Club members learned about open-ended questions, following up, and listened to similar audio pieces. After the interview students will have to opportunity to edit their own recordings.

Miami, Las Vegas, and Germany were just a few a places King students said they would like to visit if they could go anywhere in the world. Some After Schoolers have some pretty trips laid out – even crossing the Atlantic Ocean by helicopter to go shopping in Paris!

Pittsburgh King After School: New Years Hopes

It’s hard to believe but we haven’t seen the King After School kids in about a month due to the holiday schedule. Students shared some of their ambitions with us for the new year. Their goals are wide-ranging; everything from trying new sports to learning more about professional wrestling.

Clairton CASTLE 2015: Microphone Building – Part 2

Students at Clairton’s CASTLE after school program finished building their DIY microphones! Then, after sanding off an insulating coating on their makeshift leads, they were able to test their mics by connecting them to a mixer and speaker using alligator clips.
