Read the full story »During Summer 2015, SLB Radio Productions, Inc., in partnership with YouthCAST convened a group of middle and high school students. While learning about digital audio recording, the group also spent time discussing attributes of role models and identifying adults with a connection to McKeesport to be interviewed.
On our first day of Radio Club, students at Pittsburgh King were asked: “How would others describe you?”
In partnership with A+ Schools, WAMO 100 and Familylinks, Pittsburgh Public Schools hosted its annual back to school event. #WeArePPS: A Back to School event was designed to equip participating families with the resources necessary to achieve a healthy start to the 2015-2016 school year.

IN SUMMER 2015, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies welcomed ten students as Youth Philanthropy Interns. This 8-week program was made possible through a grant from The Heinz Endowments and is based on its long-running similar program in Pittsburgh.
Throughout their internship, students assessed community needs and developed two funding opportunities for local non-profits to apply for grants of up to $25,000 to address these needs. In addition to their grantmaking, interns created these radio documentaries.
In Summer 2015, SLB Radio Productions Inc., in partnership with Moon Area School District convened a group of first through fourth graders. While learning about digital audio recording, the group also designed their own books and shared something that they know how to do!
And so Radio Camp 2015 comes to an end. Radio Campers experienced a sendoff loaded with snacks, drinks and good vibes. After receiving a CD with all of their recorded audio, they then watched a slideshow of photos taken over the whole 28 days of camp. It was a fantastic ride, made all the more awesomely perfect by the campers we met and worked with!
After putting the finishing touches on their DIY microphones, radio campers then got to test them using a mixer, alligator clips and a deep, bellowing voice. Campers then got a chance to play with a “Voice Changer,” singing songs as Darth Vader or rapping as Alvin and the Chipmunks!
As we finished up a great summer of learning about audio, interviewing, and making recordings, campers tried their hand at writing commercials. Some campers chose businesses that already exist, while others created their own services and penned advertisements accordingly. A few writers even elected to add music.
Grow Pittsburgh’s Summer Intern Program in Homewood provides local teens with the opportunity to gain summer employment while learning about the value of growing and eating healthy food. Here, the interns from 2015 share their thoughts on gardening, harvesting, fresh food, herbs, and favorite experiences.
