But afterwards, the kids were introduced to the editing process and Adobe Audition–the software SLB staffers use in office. We had some fun rearranging previous recordings around (apparently Nikko likes to eat monkeys and his favorite animal is tacos?) and then made recordings about the qualities that make a good friend.
In the Spring 2013, 2nd and 3rd grade girls in the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania after school program at Pittsburgh King PreK-8 learned about the many properties and uses of water through a variety of hands-on activities, named The Wonders of Water Journey. The Saturday Light Brigade worked with the scouts to discuss and demonstrate what they had learned from their different activities.
On our sixth day of Radio Camp, after playing the super fun “Brainstorm Race” warm-up game, we learned a ton of new things about interviews: from making sure your recording equipment is working properly, to understanding the importance of open ended and follow up questions! Campers then paired up and tried out their newly acquired interviewing skills on each other.
On our fourth and fifth day of Radio Camp, campers were asked to reflect on a significant accomplishment in their lives. Their answers ranged from striking out three batters in the 9th, through unearthing fossils in their backyard, to even standing up for their convictions and giving the American version of “Godzilla” a positive review. We then headed outside for some one-on-one interview practice with the newly introduced H1 digital recorders.
On our third day of Radio Camp, we continued to learn the subtleties of our professional radio gear, but everyone is picking up quickly! Our wonderful campers are also quickly picking up what good microphone technique means, and how to make yourself sound great every time that you record!
On our second day of Radio Camp, our dreamers came up with our radio station call letters:
WACD (We Are Classical Dreamers)
We also learned the three essential roles for any recording session–talent, producer and engineer–and then we wrote and recorded “three things about me” and put these new skills to the test.
Hurray! The Summer Dreamer’s Radio Program has officially started for its fourth year in a row. Today we met our campers and played the fun ice-breaker “Two Truths and One Lie.” We also made our very own Radio Badges.
In Spring 2013, as part of a 12-week Creative Arts program focused on technology, Propel East 7th and 8th graders participated in several hands-on labs designed to teach the basic construction and physics that allow audio-based devices (such as microphones and speakers) to function. Over the course of 6 weeks, students learned how to build a functioning microphone using household materials, as well as how to “circuit bend” – the process of rewiring the circuit board inside an audio electronics device (such as a keyboard) to elicit modified sound.
In Spring 2013, as part of a 6-week Creative Arts program focused on radio broadcasting and audio technology, Propel East 6th graders learned how to use professional recording equipment and discovered the mechanics and physics behind audio-based devices, such as microphones and speakers. Among other topics, students wrote and recorded observations about the effects technology has on their daily lives and our society.
As part of a 6-week Creative Arts program in Spring of 2013, fourth graders at Propel East learned about the technology used to make recordings for radio, while discovering the impact of their own voice and opinion. They identified social issues that concerned them and researched caring organizations that address these concerns. They then developed a script and recorded these public service announcements, which are also schedule for distribution via The Saturday Light Brigade radio program.
