Fifth grade students at Clairton CASTLE were asked to discuss peer pressure, bullying and their personal experiences with both–as well as the best ways to combat both.
Fifth grade students at Clairton CASTLE participated in a round table discussion concerning their high school football team’s loss in the PIAA Championship and the consequent fight that has yielded scrutiny from outside sources.
During the 2014- 2015 school year, SLB , in partnership with Brothers and Sisters Emerging convened a group of middle and high school students. While learning about digital audio recording, the group also spent time discussing attributes of role models and identifying adults with a connection to Garfield to be interviewed. With support as needed, students then arranged, conducted and edited the interviews.
We asked After Schoolers at Pittsburgh King who they would have dinner with if it could be anyone that has ever lived. Some students chose family members while others chose athletes or celebrities to share their meal with.
We asked our first two blocks of Brashear students if they could have dinner with anyone ever – dead or alive – who they would choose. There were some interesting responses, ranging from family members to Michael Jackson to Penguins goaltender Marc Andre Fleury.
Middle school students at Clairton finished reflecting on what would happen on their “Perfect Day.” Some would learn so much they’d never have to return to school, while an other would like to transform into Odell Beckham Jr!
The Youth Media Advocacy project teaches local high school students how to use the media to gain a voice in the community, and helps them hone ideas for advocacy campaigns that will aid their schools and communities. Students from Wilkinsburg High School, Pittsburgh Obama and Pittsburgh Brashear return to classrooms after Winter break to discuss education issues and set goals for 2015.
Students wrote in haiku poem format. It consists of three lines with the first and last line having 5 moras, and the middle line having 7. A mora is a sound unit, much like a syllable, but is not identical to it.
Students at Clairton were asked, “What would happen on your perfect day? What would you do? Who would you spend it with?”
