Read the full story »Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh King PreK-8 followed up their earlier conversations on what they learned from adults and role models with this discussion, which focused on the advice they would give to younger kids.
In the Radio Club’s fourth meeting, the students from King were asked what they wanted to do when they grow up. After ten minutes of reflection, the kids recorded these pieces.
Students of Clairton’s CASTLE program made audio recordings about the qualities of a good friend. These pieces are a result of their weekly sessions in which students will learn about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio.
Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh King PreK-8 had an opportunity to listen back all the hard work they’ve done in this program to date. They had the opportunity to record pieces from a day they missed or to choose their own subjects. Many chose to talk about what they would do if they were in a position of authority, such as a teacher or a president, and others talked about who their favorite role models were.
On February 13th the Radio Club met again at The Saturday Light Brigade’s radio studio, where third graders from Pittsburgh King reflected on what being a good role model means.
Students in Citiparks’ After School Academy at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 wrote and recorded three things about the qualities a good friend has. They talked about their best friends and thought about how to best express that in writing and spoken word.
Students in Radio Club at The ZONE wrote and recorded short pieces describing themselves. They then learned how to edit their own pieces and place them in a montage while also learning about multi-tracking. Finally, they placed their pieces over a beat and made decisions about how their voices should be mixed over a music bed. This montage is a result of the third of nine weekly sessions in which students will learn about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio.

Students in Radio Club at Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 came to the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to visit our studio and to tour the museum. While in the studio, they learned how a radio station works and made recordings about what they’ve learned. These pieces are a result of the fifth of six weekly sessions in which students are learning about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio.
