Read the full story »Students at Clairton’s CASTLE program, after learning how they worked, got to build microphones out of household materials! Using just two magnets, a length of copper wire, three washers, a nut, a bolt, a plastic straw and a cup, campers created an amazing piece of technology!
Students at Clairton were asked to describe the very first time they ever did, learned or experienced something amazing!
Students at Pittsburgh King got the chance to interview each other and learn some basic examination techniques. Afterwards we played the Who Am I? game, where students try to figure out which famous person they are by asking their fellow classmates questions.
Students in Radio Club at Pittsburgh Schiller 6-8 wrote and recorded these pieces where they describe themselves in three ways. These pieces are a result of the first of six weekly sessions in which students will learn about the microphones, mixers and digital recorders used in producing features for radio.

Students at Clairton CASTLE were introduced to the H1–a handheld, digital recording device. After learning the basics, they then formed small groups and took turns interviewing each other. Some opted to interview themselves with a silly voice and an alter-ego while some even interviewed a teacher!
Students at Clairton continued with their round table story telling project: “The Haunted Birthday Party,” with each child adding their own personal twist to the already wild and expansive tale.
Young artists and families of Pittsburgh Montessori gathered in the theatre of the Children’s Museum to celebrate their work. The “One School: Many Faces, Many Places” exhibit featured self-portraits, mud-paintings, and collage work. We welcomed these young artists into our studios to talk about their experience and share their artistic philosophies as well as their creative methods.
Students knew that Brashear’s namesake was John A. Brashear but they didn’t know much else about the astronomer, inventor, and Western Pennsylvania native.
Students once again took turns telling a new communal story, this time concerning a haunted birthday party, a fainting epidemic and popular movie monsters becoming real!
